Service Description

Step away from the digital noise and reconnect with your hands in this tactile, beginner-friendly workshop. The pinch pot is the world's most ancient pottery technique—a simple, rhythmic process of shaping a ball of clay using only your thumbs and fingers. In just two hours, you will transform a humble lump of earth into a unique, functional vessel. This workshop is designed for those who want to experience the "grounding" magic of clay without the commitment of a multi-week course. What to Expect: Tactile Grounding: We begin by slowing down and noticing the sensation of the clay—its temperature, moisture, and weight. The Art of the Pinch: You’ll be guided through the fundamental method of opening and thinning clay walls to create a balanced form, such as a trinket dish, teacup or small succulent pot. Personal Touches: Once your form is built, you can decorate its surface or leave it beautifully organic, showing the unique "thumbprints" of your making process. Colour & Finish: You will choose from our selection of premium studio glazes. After the session, your piece will stay at the Roost to be dried, bisque-fired, glazed, and fired again. All-Inclusive Experience: Materials: High-quality professional clay and full use of studio tools. Firing: All bisque and glaze firing fees are included. Tea and Coffee available. Social Impact: Every workshop booking directly supports The Phoenix Program, providing subsidized creative wellness sessions for Upper Hutt residents navigating mental health challenges. Pick-up Information: Because pottery takes time to dry and go through two separate kiln firings, your finished piece will be ready for collection from the Roost approximately 3 weeks after your workshop. No experience is necessary. Simply bring yourself and a willingness to get a little messy.

Cancellation Policy

At The Potters' Roost, we keep our class sizes small to ensure everyone receives quality guidance and enough space to create. Because we are a social enterprise, every booking directly supports our community programs. 1. Course & Workshop Cancellations 7 Days or More Notice: We offer a full refund (minus a $15 admin fee) or a rebooking for a future course. 48 Hours to 7 Days Notice: We offer a 50% refund or a rebooking. Less than 48 Hours Notice: No refunds or credits can be issued, as it is difficult to fill your spot at such short notice. However, you are welcome to send a friend in your place! Missed classed and no-shows cannot be refunded. 2. "Catch-Up" Sessions (For 6-Week Courses) We understand that life happens—illness, family, or work can get in the way. We do offer formal "make-up" classes with a tutor, once a month on a Thursday evening to catch-up on what you missed. 3. If We Cancel In the rare event that we have to cancel a class due to tutor illness or low enrolment, you will be offered a full refund or a priority transfer to the next available date.
