Service Description
Reconnect with your creativity in our 6-week Beginner’s Hand-Building Course. Hand-building is the most ancient and intimate way to work with clay. It’s a slow, tactile process that invites you to be fully present, making it the perfect creative escape from the bustle of daily life. Whether you’re a total beginner or haven't touched clay since school, this course will guide you through the fundamental building blocks of ceramics in a calm and supportive environment. What You’ll Learn: Over six weeks, we’ll move from a simple lump of clay to finished, functional, and decorative pieces. You will learn the three core techniques of hand-building: Pinching: The most intuitive way to understand the "memory" of clay, creating bowls and organic forms. Slab Building: Learning to roll and join clay to create structured, architectural pieces like mugs, vases, or boxes. Coiling: Building height and complex shapes using traditional rope-like layers. Surface & Decoration: Beyond building, we dive into the artistry of surface design. You will learn: Sgraffito: The art of scratching through underglaze to reveal the clay beneath in intricate patterns. Underglaze Decoration: Adding vibrant colour and painterly details to your raw work. Glazing: Understanding the final stage of the ceramic process to ensure your pieces are water-tight, food-safe, and beautifully finished. All-Inclusive Experience: We believe your creative time should be stress-free. Your course fee is all-inclusive, meaning you don't need to worry about extra costs. We provide: All high-quality clay and professional studio tools. A wide range of underglazes and studio glazes. All bisque and glaze firing fees. The Social Impact: By booking a seat in this course, you are directly supporting our mission. As a social enterprise, profits from our standard classes help us provide subsidized places in our Phoenix Program, offering the healing power of clay to Upper Hutt residents navigating mental health challenges. Join us at the cottage to slow down, get your hands crafting, and create something uniquely yours. Completing this course makes you eligible to become a studio member to continue your clay journey.
