Wheel Throwing for Beginners Course
6 Week Course. Sundays 9.30am-12
Service Description
Discover the meditative art of the pottery wheel in our 6-week introductory course. There is a unique magic in the "first spin"—the moment a lump of clay begins to take shape beneath your hands. Our Beginner’s Wheel course is designed to take you from the very basics to creating your own functional ceramic collection. With only six wheels available per session, you are guaranteed personalized guidance in a calm, focused, and supportive environment. What You’ll Experience: Over six weeks, we move through the core stages of the throwing process. Week 1: The Foundation. Master the art of "wedging" and the all-important skill of centering. You’ll learn to open the clay and pull your first cylinder walls. Week 2: Trimming & Refining. We return to your pieces from Week 1 to learn the trimming process. You’ll refine the weight and silhouette of your work and add foot rings to your pots. Weeks 3-4: Shaping & Form. Moving beyond the cylinder to create bowls, vases, and more complex shapes. We focus on consistency, wall thickness, and gaining control over the clay. Week 5: Advanced Trimming & Details. Refining your shaped pieces and learning how to add handles or surface textures to truly make the work your own. Week 6: The Finishing Touch. An introduction to our studio glazes. You’ll learn how to dip and decorate your bisque-fired pieces to make them food-safe and beautiful. All-Inclusive & Stress-Free: To keep your creative escape as seamless as possible, your course fee is fully inclusive. There are no hidden costs. We provide: Your first 5kg of clay. Full use of studio resources and equipment. All bisque and glaze firing fees for work made during the course. Premium studio glazes. The Social Impact: Your seat at the wheel does more than just teach you a new skill. As a social enterprise, profits from this course directly fund The Phoenix Program—our subsidized initiative providing creative wellness sessions for Upper Hutt residents navigating mental health challenges. Path to Membership: Completion of this 6-week course includes your full Studio Induction. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll be eligible to join The Potters' Roost as a member, giving you ongoing access to the wheels to continue your practice independently. Come and find your rhythm at the wheel. No experience necessary—just a willingness to get your hands muddy - Aprons provided :)
